The Wenatchee Wild opened the season with eleven straight games on the road, the last of which ended in a 4-1 defeat to the Chilliwack Chiefs on Saturday night at Prospera Centre.
The Wild established solid pressure early, and outshot the Chiefs handily early on but late in the period, Chilliwack took a 1-0 lead on a 2-on-1 rush that was finished off by Trevor Peca with a shot off the saucer feed from the left side. Then, :35 seconds later Skyler Brind’Amour guided a bounding puck through the leg pads of Cal Sandquist for a 2-0 lead, prompting a Wenatchee goaltending change at 16:46. Early in the second, the Chiefs struck again, a clean wrister from the left wing by Matt Holmes that eluded Austin Park high on the glove side for a 3-0 score. Wenatchee’s special teams made their mark on the penalty kill when Matt Gosiewski came in alone on a shorthanded breakaway and bested Chief goalie Mathieu Caron on the blocker side with a nifty snapshot to make it 3-1, assisted by Murphy Stratton and Brandon Koch. The Wild would outshoot Chilliwack 34-23 on the night, but Kevin Wall hit the empty net with 1:07 left for the final 4-1 margin.
Wenatchee (5-6-0) will finally enjoy their Home Opener on Friday October 12 against the Nanaimo Clippers (2-7-0), and will feature the unveiling of the Championship Banners, a Ring Ceremony, a 1,000 cowbell giveaway from AG Supply, and more. The game will be available for video streaming on HockeyTV, and broadcast live on “NewsRadio 560 KPQ” with the Pregame Show airing at 6:45 pm.
