WILD FALL SHORT IN TRAIL

WILD FALL SHORT IN TRAIL

By Arch Ecker

Wenatchee’s eight game road trip to open the 2021-22 BCHL season brought the Wild to Trail, BC on Saturday night for a rematch with the Smoke Eaters, who squeezed out an overtime win in the first meeting of the year two weeks ago.

Searching for their first win of the young season, the Wild came out with a strong effort, holding Trail without a shot on goal for the first seven minutes, and outshooting the Smoke Eaters 10-1 midway through the frame. Wenatchee outshot Trail 13-6 overall in a scoreless first period.

Trail dented the scoreboard first, winning a footrace down the right wing and scoring on a low hard shot at 1:23, then pulled ahead 2-0 on the power play when a Wild zone clear attempt was poke checked setting up the tally at 15:20. Wenatchee capitalized on a miscue by the Trail goalie, allowing Quinn Emerson to easily deposit the puck into the abandoned net at 17:56 for a shorthanded goal and the 2-1 margin. Two period shot totals read 25-13 Wenatchee.

Wenatchee outshot Trail again in the final frame (11-7) but it was a tic-tac-toe passing play with a man advantage that put Trail up 3-1. In the final 90 seconds, the Wild pulled the goalie for the extra attacker and kept up sustained pressure until a 160-foot zone clear by Trail found the empty net for the 4-1 final. The Wild fall to 0-3-3 while Trail improves to 5-3-1.

The Wild close out the road trip next weekend at Kal Tire Place in Vernon, BC to face the Vernon Vipers on Friday and Saturday nights. Game times will both be 7:30 pm with live coverage available on bchltv.com and NewsRadio 560 KPQ. Follow the Wild on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
