Going into the third period with a 3-0 deficit, the Wenatchee Wild mounted a surge that closed the gap to a single goal but were unable to find the equalizer, as the Powell River Kings held on for the 3-2 win at Hap Parker Arena in Powell River, BC on Friday night.
Wenatchee had good pressure early, but the Kings got a break when a dump-in from the neutral zone was swatted away by goalie Austin Park, but was gathered by Ben Thomas and swatted into the open side of the net for a 1-0 Powell River lead. The Kings doubled their lead at 9:26 of the second period when Ethan Schmuck scored a shorthanded goal, just the second shorthanded goal allowed by the Wild all season. Schmunk took a pass that sent him between two Wild defensemen, and snuck his shot past Park on the glove side. Levi Glasman converted on a power play chance to make it 3-0, set up by Ryan Brushett’s zone entry on the left wing, tossing it to the crease from below the goal line for Glasman to punch home. The Wild turned up the heat in the third period, outshooting the Kings 15-5. Matt Dorsey finished off a Murphy Stratton pass, swatting home his own rebound to give the Wild a jolt. Wenatchee pulled within a goal when Jacob Modry sprinted the length of the ice, shared a quick give-and-go with Brian Adams, then whirled around the net where he spotted Christophe Fillion, who buried Modry’s pass to make it a 3-2 game with 4:12 still to play. The Wild kept solid pressure down the stretch but couldn’t knot the score, falling by a final of 3-2. The Wild outshot the Kings 33-23.
